Drabble One: Observance

Nikolas rubs Emily's back while she kneels by the toilet, holds her while she sobs, lacking the energy to stand.

He walks her through the grounds, espousing the benefits of fresh air, leading her along a route featuring benches, rocks, soft grass at restful intervals.

Soon, she moves in. Once, when Stefan passes her room, he sees his nephew with scissors in hand, standing aside while Emily stares at her short-haired reflection in a hand-held mirror. She doesn't notice Nikolas's pallid skin, his trembling grip on the scissors, the convulsive swallows sticking in his throat.

She doesn't notice. Stefan does.

Drabble Two: Parentage

"You want Sonny's child," Carly sneers. Her hand on her stomach is possessive; Ric wants to shackle her wrists so she can't touch herself that way. She has no rights to that baby.

It's Sonny's, but it's also Ric's, ownership transferred when Sonny caused Elizabeth's miscarriage. Carly's merely the vehicle, bringing the child to term. If Ric had his way, Sonny would be in this room, at Ric's mercy, forced to watch Ric take their baby and raise it as his alone; the idea thrills him to his fingertips.

"You want Sonny's child," Carly says.

Ric smiles. "Yes I do."
