Usual disclaimers apply: I own nothing but this ficlet.
BOXING by Jayne Leitch
2005
Angel compartmentalizes. He suspects it has something to do with the clean divisions between self, soul and vampire he's forced himself to believe in over the years.
He's very good at it. He likes knowing that things are arranged the way he needs them to be.
When he moved into the Wolfram and Hart penthouse, he put the box on a shelf in the closet. He rarely thinks about the videotape inside the box--another feat of obsessive yet effortless compartmentalization--but every time he opens the closet door the box is there, and Angel is reassured by how neat it all is. It's the same feeling he gets when he sees the payments for Cordelia's hospital room listed on the firm's monthly account statements: a feeling of having put everything where he needs it to be, of being prepared for the day when he will, actually, need it. Of not having to think about it until he absolutely has to.
Angel compartmentalizes. He keeps Doyle in a box in his closet, and Cordelia in a box in the cabinet where all the monthly statements are filed.
He likes to think that means they're together, in a way.
End.
